This 2014 project in Brighton, MI, creates the illusion of island living. Although the outdoor space is small, every inch was designed to create luxury lakefront living and a beautiful naturalistic transition from the home to the water. The concrete driveway features a gorgeous inlay pointing at the four directions - the first hint that this home is all about the water. Stepping outside from the back of the home, one enters an expansive paver patio featuring a compass inlay. The patio encircles the back of the home before stepping down toward the water’s edge. This outdoor living space feels formal thanks to the precise placement of flower-filled urns and meticulously trimmed hedges. The light hues of the paver stones perfectly complement the home’s architecture. The patio space feels much like a waterfront estate on the Riviera. But this formal feeling changes the moment one steps down toward the water, where large stones echo the colors of the natural rocky beach, and more relaxed plantings make a beautiful transition through nature down to the pier.
